Water crisis on the horizon? Here’s how we’re working for the future of water
For a long time, we in Sweden have taken access to clean water for granted. However, as the effects of climate change become increasingly apparent, it’s time to rethink our approach. Industry is one of the sectors where water is used in large quantities, presenting an opportunity to make a significant impact. Through our Unity4Water project, we are developing solutions that enable the reuse of process water in closed systems—an important step toward a more water-wise future.
At PiiA’s annual conference, the importance of political engagement in strengthening Sweden’s water resilience was highlighted. By implementing water-efficient solutions, such as those developed within Unity4Water, we can create a model for sustainable water management that can inspire other sectors and nations. Particular emphasis was placed on setting goals to reduce energy consumption through water reuse and encouraging other industries to follow suit. Political support is crucial for establishing national objectives and driving innovation, contributing to Sweden’s ambition to secure future water needs for both society and industry.
How Unity4Water is advancing water reuse in industry
Unity4Water is built on close collaboration between technology developers, researchers, and industry experts to create sustainable water systems. Key steps include:
Mapping water flows: By analyzing how water flows through industrial processes, we identify opportunities to save energy and resources and determine how water can be purified and reused.
Developing purification technologies: Technologies like ozone treatment break down microorganisms and contaminants in a more environmentally friendly way than chemicals, while maintaining water quality.
Implementing closed systems: The goal is to create closed systems where water circulates internally without the need for fresh water from municipal supplies. This reduces dependence on external resources and lowers energy use through recycling.
Digital monitoring: Digital monitoring systems allow us to detect and adjust changes in real-time, optimizing safety and efficiency while minimizing energy losses.
Sustainable technology for societal benefit
Unity4Water is not just about technology; it’s about creating societal value. Reducing water consumption frees up resources—such as freshwater, energy, and financial capital—that can be invested in other societal areas. This strengthens the resilience of both industry and society against water shortages and environmental challenges.
Striving for a shared vision of sustainable water
Water Wise Societies is an initiative within Impact Innovation, funded by Vinnova, Formas, and the Swedish Energy Agency, with RISE as the host organization. Its goal is to promote sustainable water solutions and secure water supplies for future generations. Unity4Water shares many of the objectives and challenges identified by Water Wise Societies and sees great potential in collaborative efforts.
PiiA focuses on the process industry, and Unity4Water emphasizes industrial water use. By fostering partnerships and creating synergies, we can strengthen the drive toward sustainable water use within both industry and society at large. Unity4Water demonstrates how industry can play a central role, working alongside other initiatives in the sector to build a future where water is available in the right quantity and quality for people, the environment, and businesses.
