Green Cluster joins Unity4Water: Focus on circular water solutions and local resources
Green Cluster, an economic association based in Nuntorp, has recently become an official partner of Unity4Water. The association works to create a vibrant knowledge and development center to promote sustainable development within the green sectors. One of Green Cluster’s key initiatives is Circular Systems, which focuses on identifying and refining waste streams from local businesses—a mission closely aligned with Unity4Water’s goals.
– We aim to use resources more efficiently and create sustainable water solutions,” says Christian Friman, project manager at Green Cluster, adding:
– Collaboration with Unity4Water was a natural step for us since we already work with Toppfrys AB, which has been part of Unity4Water for some time.
Reusing Existing Infrastructure
Green Cluster’s specific focus within the Unity4Water project is to reuse existing pipelines and connection points from the irrigation infrastructure previously linked to Toppfrys. By repurposing these elements, the aim is to enable water reuse and support a greater diversification of crops grown locally. The challenge lies in managing water use and treatment during peak production periods at Toppfrys, which requires creating an integrated solution involving all stakeholders.
Optimizing the Entire Value Chain
The drought in 2018 highlighted how seasonal variations can have significant impacts. A dry early summer led to irrigation bans, causing soil cracks that allowed nutrients to seep into the groundwater. Since then, irrigation has not been used, but Green Cluster is now developing a plan to optimize the entire chain—from production to water treatment and reuse.
Towards More Sustainable Water Use
Green Cluster’s involvement in Unity4Water exemplifies how local knowledge and proactive initiatives can contribute to sustainable water solutions. The association has strong local ties and a commitment to driving positive change for the future. Through this collaboration, they hope not only to strengthen local industries but also to contribute to the project’s overarching goal: achieving more sustainable water use in Sweden.
– We see this as an opportunity not just to make a difference for our local region but also to develop models that can be applied nationally and internationally, Christian Friman concludes.
